This project challenged my ART 8 students to review the elements of art and create a unique abstract piece out of a piece of paper. Each student was given the same size papers (2 different thicknesses and sizes each) and shown the project introduction below. That's it! They had a million questions and were told to figure it out, look beyond the paper as a piece of paper and to review their elements of art notes from the last quarter we met. The results are unique, always turn out great and the problem solving process student go through is invaluable as a life lesson. After showing the simple Powerpoint project intro above and a few student examples from last quarter, students set out to create their pieces and win 1 of 3 king-sized candy bars. I am not going to lie- there was MAJOR FRUSTRATION! After not being able to figure it all out within 5 minutes and me not giving any answers, there was complaining, refusal to do it and whining. BUT....I always have confidence in my kids and they decided to give it another go. Each attempt was better than the last. The end of the first hour gave us the beginnings of some great pieces and some sense of pride and accomplishment on the student's end. days two through four:After the initial frustration of day 1, the paper pieces were coming together aesthetically and fundamentally. Elements were beginning to emerge in successful compositions and students were coming up with new ways to view and manipulate the paper. Some amazing things were happening as the work days went by and you can see some great pieces. Tomorrow (Thursday) students will chose the 1 piece they want graded and submitted for the challenge and we will display them against a black background. You can find them in the ART 8 Gallery at the end of the week.
