mrs. crandell has moved to northwest elementary!
It is with a bittersweet goodbye that I leave GLMS to take a full time 3-5 art position in the Northwest Community School District. This move was a hard one to make as I have loved my kids and colleagues at Grass Lake. Please make sure you follow my new website to see what my young artists are creating in the years to come!
Most teens don't mural
After a couple days of hard work, our MTD anti-drug mural is finished! These students did a tremendous job planning and painting. They have definitely created a creative means to get a wonderful message across to their fellow students! I am so proud of my talented art students and am grateful to have been able to be included in this project.
Special shoutout to Mrs. Tiffany Finch- our MTD coordinator
and to these awesome artists with a great cause:
Maddie, Madi, McKenze, Ella, Sydney, Jolee, Meghan, Georgia, Sam, Desirae, Maddie, Dalten

arts across the curriculum
I am so excited about what our amazing ELA 7 teacher, Mrs. Terri Burg, did with her classes this past week. For a creative piece of poetry for their unit, her students created blackout poems from old, soon to be recycled books. What a wonderful way to incorporate the arts into the curriculum!!! I am so lucky to work with such creative, supportive colleagues who understand the need for creative freedom and expression across the curriculum! Way to go ELA 7!!!!
GLMS Most teens don't mural
This past week was the kick-off to our GLMS MTD anti-drug window mural. I am so proud to be a part of this project and the message it sends to our students. Since all of the MTD members have had art with me in the past, we used an artistic flare to get our message across. One of our favorite artists served as inspiration for our important message. Keith Haring is a well-known graffiti artist that created murals based on important social causes like AIDS awareness and drug addiction. His simplistic figures and bright colors made a perfect fit for our awesome window murals! Check out our progress below and help spread our message!! Our final murals will be done at the week's end.
The final quarter
This week brought me back my last bunch of artists for the school year- the 4th quarter is upon us! Along with some much needed sun and warmer temperatures, our room will see some amazing things from our awesome artists over the next 9 weeks. ART 7 gets a special treat and will participating in a Genius Hour twice a week. To learn more about Genius Hour or 20 Time, see our ART 7 page. 3rd Quarter final pieces are making their way into the grade level galleries, so make sure to check them out too!
GLMS Most Teens DOn't
The GLMS chapter (8th grade students) of Jackson County's teen drug prevention program, is using their art skills to relay anti-drug messages to our students and community. The Most Teens Don't organization will be creating window paint mural in the style of GLMS' favorite graffiti artist- Keith Haring! See our pictures from a brainstorming lesson below and make sure you watch for our mural going up mid-April! Thanks to our Most Teens Don't leaders- Mrs. Tiffany Finch and Mrs. Wendy Murdock for letting art be a part of this wonderful message.
thank you

We are super excited about the addition to our growing iPads in Art collection!!! We currently have 9 iPads for digital art projects like our forced perspective photo galleries, claymation stop-motion videos and our iExpress mini posters.

art across the curriculum at glms
Shoutout to Mrs. Mietelka, our 6th grade math teacher, on the awesome area and perimeter assignment she had her Math 6 students complete this week! Mrs. Mietelka took advantage of our ART 8 duck tape perspectives up in the hallways and had her students measure out shapes within our art work to practice their area and perimeter equations. The students had a great time using a non-traditional resources to practice their math skills and we enjoyed how our artwork is inspiring other subjects to incorporate the arts into their curriculum!
We're Back...finally!!
After our extended winter break, GLMS is back in session! All three grade levels are starting new projects-sadly, our final projects, before I get my Q1 ART 6 & ART 8 kids back and a new batch of 7th graders. GLMS art needs your help!
Our ART 8 students will soon be starting a 3D deconstructed book project. Our classes are in need of old, hard cover books. Any size or title will do. These books get new life after being turned into stunning pieces of art. In the picture at the left is an example of a student piece made last year.
JCF IPads in use!
This past summer, our art department at GLMS was awarded a generous grant from the Jackson Community Foundation to purchase IPads. These awesome (sorry for the use of term- there is just no other word to describe them :)) pieces of technology will allow us to dabble with digital art, online collaboration, online portfolios and some video projects we were unable to previously do. This fall is all about baby steps and the proper setup, use and care of our new creative tools. So while, this is not the most mind-blowing use of our new technology, it is a step in the right direction. ART 8 students have been using the new IPads to document their work in our latest project in order to recreate their abstract designs when the time comes to adhere them to the background. Due to the limited number of glue guns, students had to wait or take turns. As I continue to upload apps we will use in the future, the excitement in the air grows. The kids (and I) cannot wait to start integrating this technology into our classroom on a regular basis!
classroom tour
It occurred to me yesterday that most of you have never been to our art room at GLMS. Below you will find a classroom tour slideshow. For those of you that have followed us throughout the past year- our cabinets are still in progress but we have finished a couple big ones :) Our room is still a piece of art in progress but we LOVE IT! It definitely has our personal stamp on it!
classroom donations needed
As we are starting our projects we are in need of some project supplies again this year :) Below you can find a list of items we are looking for. Any donated items can be dropped off to our wonderful Mrs. Brown in the office and I will bring them down to our room. Our community has been so giving in the past and we appreciate your continued support this year. Thank you in advance for supporting our creative endeavors!!! Be sure to check back to see what we are making with these items throughout the year!

GLEF grant awarded for our website/blog
A HUGE thank you goes out to the Grass Lake Educational Foundation for awarding our department a technology grant that will allow our site and blog to be a student-published site than teacher-run site. The GLEF is extremely generous and awards many grants yearly. With the exciting addition of our site and blog to our art department, the GLEF wanted to ensure that our student's artwork can be shared by all. The foundation generously is providing Mrs. Crandell funds to purchase a IPad with protective case and detachable keyboard!! With training, students will eventually be able to document the progress of their work, publish final pieces, create artist profiles and blog about what we did in the art room each day!!! The possibilities are endless and WE THANK YOU GLEF!!!!!!!

Andy Mouse by Keith Haring, our first artist replica piece is nearly finished on our projects-in-progress cabinet- it is stunning and really adds a pop of color to our classroom! art room makeover pictures!art room makeoverWhile our art room is the perfect room for art class, it is not the most inspiring room in the building. It is full of boring beige cabinets and plain walls. Our super cool principal, Mrs. Satterthwaite, gave the okay to transform this dull space into an artist's haven! We are currently sanding the doors and cabinets, painting the graffiti signature wall and soon reproduced masterpieces of the greats (Picasso, Haring, Warhol) will adorn those once dreary cabinets. Check back soon to see the pictures of our redecorating project!
Art 8: Painting with the littles in Kindergarten! Our ART 8 students took their artistic abilities and inner teacher down to the elementary school to paint Thanksgiving turkeys with a class of Grass Lake's tiniest artists. Check out the ART 8 tab for pictures, final projects and reflection.
